BMW Concept Active Tourer PHEV and diesel 328d to make US debut at New York International Auto Show

BMW will introduce the Concept Active Tourer plug-in hybrid (earlier post) for the first time in North America at the 2013 New York International Auto Show on 27 March. In addition to other introductions, the automaker will also showcase the diesel-powered BMW 328d.

The Concept Active Tourer features a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine coupled with an electric motor which allows for nearly 95 mpg (2.48 l/100 km). With a fully charged battery, the front-wheel drive BMW Concept Active Tourer has a maximum range of more than 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) when running on electric power alone.

The Concept Active Tourer will also feature a “Cool Shade” composite glass roof which uses “Suspended Particle Device” technology allowing the driver to make the roof crystal clear or darken with the touch of a button.

BMW 328d will be powered by a TwinPower Turbo 4 cylinder engine, delivering 180 hp (134 kW) and 280 lb-ft (380 N·m ) of torque, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.2 seconds while getting fuel economy that could exceed 40 mpg (5.9 l/100 km). Official US EPA estimates will be available closer to the launch of the 328d.

Great. So a 3 cylinder engine could power this Plugin vehicle. Wonderful concept.

Please price it appropriately, otherwise it will simply fail.
