JRC: 76.5% of world’s population in urban areas as of 2015

According to the Atlas, the most urbanized EU country is Malta, where 95% of the population live in urban areas. The comparison is possible due to the application of the European definition of urban and rural areas to the JRC’s Global Human Settlement Layer data. Second and third are the United Kingdom (85%) and the Netherlands (82%).

EU passenger car registrations drop 16.6% in October

New car registrations in the EU27 (data for Cyprus and Malta unavailable) decreased to 1,027,036 units in October, marking a 16.6% In comparison, October 2009 saw an 12.1% contraction compared to October 2009. Ten months into the year, demand for new cars has decreased by 5.5%, totaling 11,279,542 new vehicles registered.

Air pollutant emission 2010 limits exceeded in twelve EU Member States; road transport NOx a main factor

For the first time, preliminary data recently reported to the EEA by Member States allow a comparison with the legally binding emission limits for 2010 set in the EU NEC Directive. In some instances the limits were exceeded by significant amounts. The pollutant for which most exceedances were registered was NO x.

The European Environment Agency publishes the data from the report in the air pollutant emissions data viewer, a web-based interface that simplifies access and analysis of the data.
