Pakistan will witness a huge rise in electric vehicles adoption

Electric Vehicles India

Pakistan will witness a huge rise in electric vehicles adoption. The government of Pakistan is preparing for a new shift in the local automotive industry. This development will also create opportunities for jobs and will rehabilitate Pakistan’s environment across the country.

IEA finds CO2 emissions flat for third straight year even as global economy grew in 2016

Green Car Congress

This was the result of growing renewable power generation, switches from coal to natural gas, improvements in energy efficiency, as well as structural changes in the global economy. The overall increase in the world’s nuclear net capacity last year was the highest since 1993, with new reactors coming online in China, the United States, South Korea, India, Russia and Pakistan. Global CO2 emissions stalled for the third year in a row

Emissions are increasing in other developing countries: 6% for Indonesia and Malaysia; 9% for Pakistan and 12% for the Philippines. The report is based on the JRC’s Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR), which is not only unique in its space and time coverage, but also in its completeness and consistency of the emissions compilations for multiple pollutants: the greenhouse gases (GHG), air pollutants and aerosols. UN Environment report says national GHG pledges only bring one-third of reductions needed for Paris Agreement

Green Car Congress

The eighth edition of UN Environment’s Emissions Gap report, released ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, finds that national pledges only bring approximately one-third of the reduction in emissions required by 2030 to meet climate targets, with private sector and sub-national action not increasing at a rate that would help close this gap. This has raised hopes that emissions have peaked, as they must by 2020 to remain on a successful climate trajectory.

International study identifies 14 key measures to reduce methane and black carbon emissions; reduction in projected global mean warming of ~0.5 °C by 2050

Circle areas are proportional to values for (A and B) climate change, (C and D) human health (values for population over age 30), and (E and F) agriculture. While carbon dioxide is the primary driver of global warming over the long term, limiting black carbon and methane are complementary actions that would have a more immediate impact because these two pollutants circulate out of the atmosphere more quickly. Study links air pollution and cyclone intensity in Arabian Sea; suggested solutions include diesel filters and two-stroke engines running on LPG fuel

Green Car Congress

Pollution is making Arabian Sea cyclones more intense, according to a study in the journal Nature. The aerosol buildup creates formations known as atmospheric brown clouds (ABCs) in which smog from diesel emissions, soot and other by-products of biomass burning accumulate and become widespread to a degree significant enough to affect regional climate. Cyclone Phet in 2010 struck the coastlines of Pakistan and Oman and caused nearly $2 billion in damage.

2018 Environmental Performance Index: Air quality top public health threat

Green Car Congress

Recent research cited by the EPI suggests that around five million people die prematurely every year due to air pollution, accounting for approximately one in every ten deaths annually. Switzerland’s top ranking reflects strong performance across most issues, especially air quality and climate protection. Burundi, Central African Republic, Madagascar, the Bahamas, and Latvia slipped significantly in environmental performance, largely due to sub-par performance on climate change.
