How people choose to consume resources and use contraception influences their responses to climate change, according to a new study by a team of psychologists. Both substantially increase carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere, the researchers report in a special issue of American Psychologist that focuses on how psychology contributes to understanding and addressing global climate change.

Circle areas are proportional to values for (A and B) climate change, (C and D) human health (values for population over age 30), and (E and F) agriculture. Such information is needed, however, because multiple stakeholders are interested in mitigating climate change via control of non–carbon dioxide (CO 2 )–forcing agents such as BC, including the G8 nations (L’Aquila Summit, 2009) and the Arctic Council (Nuuk Declaration, 2011). A) Rate of change of terrestrial water storage, in cm/yr of water thickness, determined from GRACE gravity solutions. Although future climate change is expected to intensify the precipitation and thus increase water availability in this region, evaporation will likely also increase due to the warmer climate. The researchers computed monthly mass changes in southern Asia, which they interpreted in terms of changes in continental water storage.
