IEA finds CO2 emissions flat for third straight year even as global economy grew in 2016

Green Car Congress

Global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions were flat for a third straight year in 2016 even as the global economy grew, according to the International Energy Agency. The data signal a continuing decoupling of emissions and economic activity. This was the result of growing renewable power generation, switches from coal to natural gas, improvements in energy efficiency, as well as structural changes in the global economy. Global emissions from the energy sector stood at 32.1

Global CO2 emissions stalled for the third year in a row

Green Car Congress

The annual assessment of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the JRC and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) confirms that CO 2 emissions have stalled for the third year in a row. Global GHG emissions continue to be dominated by fossil carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, which however show a slowdown trend since 2012, and were stalled for the third year in a row in 2016. Also in Eurasia emissions grew in Turkey (5%) and Ukraine (8%).

Circle areas are proportional to values for (A and B) climate change, (C and D) human health (values for population over age 30), and (E and F) agriculture. A study by an international team of researchers, led by Drew Shindell of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, has identified 14 measures targeting methane and black carbon (BC) emissions that could reduce projected global mean warming ~0.5°C Black carbon Climate Change Emissions

UN Environment report says national GHG pledges only bring one-third of reductions needed for Paris Agreement

Green Car Congress

The eighth edition of UN Environment’s Emissions Gap report, released ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, finds that national pledges only bring approximately one-third of the reduction in emissions required by 2030 to meet climate targets, with private sector and sub-national action not increasing at a rate that would help close this gap. In the current policy scenario, total emissions for transport are 9.7 GtCO 2 direct emissions and 0.28

Study links air pollution and cyclone intensity in Arabian Sea; suggested solutions include diesel filters and two-stroke engines running on LPG fuel

Green Car Congress

Pollution is making Arabian Sea cyclones more intense, according to a study in the journal Nature. The aerosol buildup creates formations known as atmospheric brown clouds (ABCs) in which smog from diesel emissions, soot and other by-products of biomass burning accumulate and become widespread to a degree significant enough to affect regional climate. This underscores the importance of getting a handle on emissions in the region. Diesel Emissions Health India

2018 Environmental Performance Index: Air quality top public health threat

Green Car Congress

Recent research cited by the EPI suggests that around five million people die prematurely every year due to air pollution, accounting for approximately one in every ten deaths annually. Switzerland’s top ranking reflects strong performance across most issues, especially air quality and climate protection. Seychelles ranks as the most-improved country over the past decade, due largely to its commitment to combating greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions Health
