Chinese premium EV maker NIO is further enhancing user experience with the integration of GPT technology to NOMI with Microsoft Azure throughout its range of smart EVs.
The rollout, across NIO’s entire European range of smart EVs on the NT2.0 platform, is set to begin later this month and will be delivered via its class-leading firmware over-the-air update capabilities (FOTA). In doing so, NOMI is among the world’s first production, in-vehicle artificial intelligence systems actively implementing GPT technology as a standard feature throughout its entire range.
Bringing automotive grade GPT to NIO users through the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, the NOMI GPT feature will complement the unique abilities of NIO’s in-car assistant, NOMI, by addressing more complex queries, engaging in an intuitive language whilst also delivering vehicle-specific information. The result is a more personal and intuitive user experience, providing more accurate and relevant responses, without taking your eyes off the road or hands off the wheel.
Alongside personalised greetings tailored to the day – such as weather information – NOMI GPT will introduce a new range of interactions to make the most of every journey, such as providing users with information on how to operate certain features of the vehicle, when prompted.
A natural evolution of NIO’s in-car assistant, NOMI GPT allows users to get car operational support with the user manual function thanks to Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology. Quicker and easier than searching for the information manually, users now can simply pose questions such as: “How do I adjust the wing mirrors?” or “How do I check the tyre pressure?” with the instructions presented via the in-car display.
The enhanced interaction doesn’t end there, as a new FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) function lets the users get to know NOMI better – including her abilities and preferences – further personalising the user experience and enhancing interaction with the AI assistant. Users can ask NOMI about her favourite music, the games she plays, or even what she thinks about other AI systems. Up-to-date news about NIO, its founder, and other NIO products can also be accessed by simply posing a question.
Set to be released in stages to ensure the best and safest experience, NIO began rolling out the feature via its class-leading Over-The-Air (OTA) updates from April 5, 2024. This will enable existing users of all current NT2 platform-based smart EVs to benefit, with the functionality initially available in English, German, and Norwegian.
Through the addition of the NOMI GPT functionality, via Microsoft Azure OpenAI, the technology is able to generate relevant responses and address more complex queries that complement NOMI’s current ability.
“NOMI firmly established itself as an intuitive and fun way to interact with our smart EVs from launch,” says Benjamin Steinmetz, Product Experience Director Europe, NIO. “Enhanced with the GPT functionality, via Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, NOMI is now able to generate more relevant responses and address more complex queries — making journeys more valuable and joyful for users. This integration is just a start, which will help NOMI scale faster, offering new exciting features with each release.”
