Researchers develop cheaper, greener biofuels processing catalyst using waste metals and bacteria

Green Car Congress

Published in an open-access paper in the journal Fuel , their findings point to a cheaper, more environmentally friendly and renewable catalyst for processing that uses common bacteria and the metal palladium, which can be recovered from waste sources such as discarded electronics, catalytic converters, street sweeper dust and processed sewage.

A*STAR team combines fungal culture and acid hydrolyses for cost-effective production of fermentable sugars from palm oil waste

Green Car Congress

Researchers from A*STAR in Singapore have developed a fungal culture for use in a cheap and efficient method to transform waste oil palm material into biofuels and environmentally friendly plastics. The palm oil waste contains cellulose and hemicellulose that can be broken down into sugars for use in fuel and plastic production.

Univ of Washington team working to make poplar coppice viable cheap, high-volume biofuel feedstock

Green Car Congress

Our research proved that poplar coppice can be a good option to meet the cheap, high-volume criteria of biofuel feedstock. Additionally, other tree parts go to waste when only the trunk is used, making the process more inefficient and wasteful.

QUB spin-out to commercialize to technique for production of MOFs; storage for natural gas vehicles

Green Car Congress

The technology is to be commercialized by a spin-out from the University, MOF Technologies. By simply grinding together two cheap precursors in a basic milling machine, the MOF material is produced in a matter of minutes, in a powder form, ready for applications without further treatment, and without generating solvent waste.

China researchers synthesize high-density aviation fuel with cellulose

Green Car Congress

Scientists in China have developed a process for converting cellulose from plant waste from agriculture and timber harvesting into high-density aviation fuel: a polycycloalkane mixture. Tuning the reaction conditions also permits the selective production of methyl cyclopentane, which can be used as high-octane-number gasoline additive.

Oleophobic hydrophobic magnetic sponge selectively soaks up oil, sparing water and wildlife

Green Car Congress

And sorbents are not only expensive, but they generate a huge amount of physical waste—similar to the diaper landfill issue. The OHM (oleophobic hydrophobic magnetic) nanocomposite slurry can be used to coat any cheap, commercially available sponge. Skimmers don’t work in rough waters or with thin layers of oil.
