Coca-Cola Canada Expands Hybrid Truck Fleet

The Coca-Cola system in Canada will expand its fleet of hybrid-electric delivery trucks across Canada. The company will add 15 Kenworth hybrid single-axle tractors to its existing fleet of 20 side-bay trucks and two straight trucks.

In March 2009, Coca-Cola Enterprises ordered 150 Kenworth T370 diesel-electric tractors and 35 Kenworth T370 hybrid trucks, all of which will be on the road this year. The Kenworth T370 tractors (rated at 55,000 lb. GCW) are the largest hybrid delivery truck on the road in North America. (Earlier post.)

The trucks use about 30% less fuel and produce about 30% fewer emissions than standard tractors. Over the next month, these first-of-their kind vehicles will be deployed across five cities - Vancouver, London, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. The hybrid tractors will be manufactured in Sainte-Therese, Quebec by the Kenworth division of Paccar.

The expansion of our hybrid truck fleet across North America is a critical component of our commitment to reduce our overall carbon footprint by 15 percent by the year 2020.

—John Brock, Chairman and CEO, Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc.

In July, the company announced its commitment to achieve its overall Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability goals by the year 2020, what they are calling Commitment 2020. Other Commitment 2020 goals include having a water-neutral impact on local communities and recovering the equivalent of 100% of its packaging.

A step in the right direction. The next step may be with city EV delivery trucks.
