Study links carbon fiber microstructure to Li insertion mechanism in structural batteries

Green Car Congress

Carbon fibers have already beeen demonstrated as high-capacity Li-ion battery anodes, opening the way for their use as structural electrodes—i.e., simultaneously carrying mechanical load and storing electrical energy. There is therefore some potential here for carbon fiber manufacturers to extend their utilisation.

Volvo Cars’ tests of flywheel technology confirm fuel savings of up to 25%

Green Car Congress

The energy in the flywheel can then be used to accelerate the vehicle when it is time to move off again or to power the vehicle once it reaches cruising speed. The flywheel’s stored energy is sufficient to power the car for short periods. The flywheel that Volvo Cars used in the experimental system is made of carbon fiber.
