Price shock! MG declares war on BYD and GWM Ora with permanent MG4 and ZS EV discounts up to $10,000

The Australian electric car price battle has been supercharged by dramatic permanent MG discounts for the MG4 compact hatch and MG ZS EV compact SUV.

MG has effectively excised on-road costs, declaring all models in both ranges national drive-away at their current prices or lower.

For example, the cheapest MG4 Excite 51 is now $39,990 drive-away rather than plus on-road costs.

That makes it the electric car with the cheapest permanent pricing sold in Australia today, because the rival BYD Dolphin ($38,890) and GWM Ora ($39,990) both add thousands of dollars of on-road cost to their pricing.

The entry-level MG ZS EV Excite is now $39,990 drive-away, down from $41,990 plus ORCs, meaning it joins the MG4 51 in the bargain basement

Other MG models actually drop in price as well as go drive-away, creating further savings.

For instance, the MG4 Essence 77 Long Range was $55,990 plus ORCs, but it’s now $52,990 national driveway

That’s a saving of up to $8370 depending on the state.

In the MG ZS EV line-up, the Long Range price drops from $51,990 plus on-road costs to $46,990 national drive-away, a saving of up to $10,084 depending on the state.

There some confusion when MG announced its new pricing this afternoon because its refrred to the model year 2023 MG4. But MG has since clarified that.

“The pricing is permanent for the listed models for the foreseeable future. This includes when MY24 vehicles arrive in Australia,” an MG representative stated via email.

In the press release announcing the new pricing, MG Motor Australia boss Peter Ciao said this move backed up the company’s support for the federal governmnet’s proposed NVES CO2 reduction scheme.

“We are serious about our commitment to support the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard and once again, MG is putting customers first by ensuring everyone can access a wide range of affordable zero emission vehicles thanks to reduced nationwide drive-away pricing on the entire MG4 range including XPOWER as well as the ZS EV,” he said.

“In a market where customers are becoming increasingly aware of their finances, providing transparency on the final cost customers will pay for buying an EV and for servicing is very important, that’s why MG has made the move to offer both to customers with no hidden costs,” he said.

“Customers like choices. We want them to be empowered to have the freedom to drive a SUV or a hatch, which is why we are offering both the MG4 51kWh Excite and ZS EV Excite at under $40k drive away. Whenever we are able to pass price reductions like this onto our customers, we will make sure we do.”
