BYD hits 6 million New Energy Vehicle (NEV) milestone

Chinese automaker BYD has reached a major milestone, producing over 6 million New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) since 2008. The achievement highlights BYD’s position as one of the leaders in the global sustainable vehicle market and its commitment to green transportation solutions.

BYD achieved this milestone following its decision to discontinue the production of internal combustion vehicles in April 2022. By discontinuing its combustion-powered cars, BYD was able to focus solely on NEVs. It should be noted that BYD’s NEV lineup includes all-electric vehicles, EVs with range extenders, and plug-in hybrids.

BYD’s six millionth NEV was the Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5, a plug-in hybrid SUV produced at the Zhengzhou factory. The Leopard 5, which made its debut last August, is slightly smaller than the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Production and deliveries of the SUV started in November.

BYD’s NEV sales trajectory has been nothing short of phenomenal. It took BYD 13 years to manufacture its first million NEVs, but the company took just one year to achieve its second million. The third million was achieved in a mere six months, and the fourth and fifth million were attained in nine months. The sixth million mark was reached in only three months.

While BYD’s 6 million NEV milestone is undoubtedly impressive, it doesn’t mean that the automaker is fully leading the electric vehicle pack. Toyota, for example, completely beats BYD in terms of hybrid vehicles, with the Japanese automaker stating that it had produced 15 million hybrids in 2020. This was thanks to Toyota’s work with hybrids like the ubiquitous Prius, which started its sales in Japan way back in late 1997.

Pure battery electric car maker Tesla, on the other hand, also reached its 5 million-unit milestone in September 2023. Expectations are high that the EV maker will produce its 6 millionth EV sometime in early 2024, thanks to the ramp of facilities like Gigafactory Shanghai, Giga Berlin, and Gigafactory Texas.
