Buick will adopt GM’s proven extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) technology, a new-generation of 1.0T/1.3T Ecotec engines and a nine-speed transmission in new or refreshed models launched in China this year. In the coming two years, Buick will also introduce plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in China—the brand’s largest market.

The announcement from General Motors that the technology once planned for the Saturn Vue will now instead end up in a Buick came as a huge shock to me. Chevy already has the most fuel efficient sport utility/crossover in their 2010 Equinox (not a hybrid, but a direct injection model).

The yet-to-be-named crossover will debut in late 2010 before the plug-in version is launched in the following year. GM China will open a battery assembly plant in Shanghai later this year to support the growth of its new energy vehicle line-up.
