Bright Automotive To Convert VW Transporters to Plug-ins

Start-up Bright Automotive, which in May unveiled its IDEA concept series plug-in hybrid light commercial van ( earlier post ), will convert VW Transporter vans with the series hybrid Bright powertrain as a bridge between the concept and the production version of the IDEA. Conversions are expensive, noted Lyle Shuey, Bright VP of Marketing and Sales, and the converted Transporters will not be as efficient as the purpose-built IDEA.

Bright Automotive Launches Bright eSolutions; US Army Hybrid Vehicle Contract

Bright Automotive, Inc., the developer of the purpose-built, plug-in hybrid IDEA ( earlier post ) launched of Bright eSolutions to support automotive customers worldwide to accelerate vehicle electrification, lightweighting, and overall platform efficiency. Bright eSolutions will work with TACOM to demonstrate the feasibility of Bright Automotive’s parallel hybrid technology for military non-combat use.

Bright Automotive, the developer of the purpose-built, plug-in hybrid IDEA ( earlier post ), and General Motors Co. Funding through GM Ventures will allow Bright to begin ramping up the development of the production program for the IDEA in the third quarter of 2010. Bright continues to seek a low-interest loan through the Department of Energy’s ATVM program. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding in July.

Bright Automotive has applied for $35 million in government grants to accelerate the production of its plug-in hybrid the IDEA ( earlier post ), and to deliver battery solutions to the industry through its engineering services arm. The IDEA is a multi-purpose, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in the light truck classification aimed at commercial and government fleets.

If you’ve been wondering just how real the new Chevy Volt that gets 230 mpg in city driving is , well just take a look for yourself. This one might actually get MORE than 230 mpg in the city seeing as how it has no doors, windows, seats, any interior, hood, roof, underbody or trunk. At least GM sent this nifty printed banner explaining all about the new J1772 industry standard recharging plug. They even had a real plug connected to their toy car on the exhibit hall.

We interviewed Senator Lugar in DC recently — as we caught the Capitol Hill debut of Bright Automotive’s Idea — a plug-in hybrid electric delivery vehicle. Senator Lugar was also cheering for his home team – Bright are from Anderson, Indiana. They claim the Idea will save a 250 vehicle fleet company more than $500,000 a year in reduced fuel costs. GM’s Tony Posawatz was there plugging the Volt.

PHEV conversion company Echo Automotive completes $3M financing, joins CALSTART

Echo Automotive, Inc., a developer of technologies enabling the conversion of existing fleet vehicles into plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, completed a $3-million financing with United Fleet Financing, LLC, through a private placement offering and mezzanine financing. The Electrification Roadmap calls for 75% of light-duty VMT in the US to be electric by 2040. Achieving this will require a minimum of 25% of new light-duty vehicles purchased in the US to be grid-enabled vehicles (GEV) by 2020. By 2040, the report proposes, 75% of the light-duty vehicle miles traveled in the US should be electric miles. As a result, oil consumption in the light-duty fleet would be reduced to just 2.0
