Boston Public Schools will operate 11% of its bus fleet with Blue Bird propane autogas buses, starting with the 2015-2016 school year. Like many urban cities, Boston has implemented mandates for reducing tailpipe emissions. About 40% of its fleet consists of 169-inch wheelbase buses.

With the passage of the IIJA, the Biden administration committed $5 billion to the production of environmentally cleaner school buses. Additionally, Boston will replace 737 diesel buses by 2030 with electric buses. Half of these funds have been earmarked specifically for electric school buses.
