Traction motor of BMW 225xe PHEV wins the Bavarian State Award for E-mobility / eCar TEC Award for cooling concept

BMW has won the Bavarian State Award for E-mobility / eCar TEC Award for the innovative cooling concept used for the electric traction motor in the BMW 225xe plug-in hybrid.

The BMW 225xe pairs a 100 kW/136 hp 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with 65 kW electric traction motor and a 7.7 kWh Li-ion battery pack. Maximum all-electric range is 41 kilometers (25 miles). Driving the rear wheels with the electric motor and the front wheels with the combustion engine’s power produces an electrified all-wheel-drive system that is distinct in the BMW 225xe’s segment and promises outstanding traction in all weathers, especially in adverse conditions. The combustion engine sends its power to the front wheels via a six-speed Steptronic transmission and delivers up to 220N·m (162 lb-ft) of torque.

The traction motor of the BMW 225xe is cooled by air blown by a rotor-driven fan through channels in the rotor of the electric motor. It then emits heat over a water-cooled housing. The benefits include lower costs, less components and an increase in the duration of performance by up to 25%.

The prize is awarded in 4 categories—EV; powertrain; Energy & Infrastructure/Energy Storage; and Sustainable Product & Mobility concept—and is endowed with a total of €60,000 (US$66,000).

Very similar performances with the Toyota Prius Prime for 2X the price? I (and many others) would prefer two Prius Prime?

Isn't a normal BMW almost twice as expensive as a similar Toyota to begin with?

Even so, BMWs are selling like hot cakes and with higher profit margin.

Now what they need to do is to offer this driveline in a 3-series with a slightly large battery.
