China’s Nio has pulled the drapes off the Nio ET9 it hopes will steal sales from luxurious European brands Mercedes-Maybach, Bentley and, even, Rolls-Royce when it lands in China in 2025 priced from 800,000 yuan ($165,000). Volkswagen Group (which includes VW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley in the U.S.) Models from Bentley and Lamborghini will come, too, but in the small, expensive numbers in which those brands routinely trade. The VW Group is all-in, so expect to see more news and road tests appearing soon.

Heck, I had people comment they thought I was driving a Bentley. To learn more about the technology in the GV80, you can go here. The simple reason is it can compete against luxury midsize SUVs from Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW, and beats them in several areas, not the least of which is costing $15,000 to $20,000 less.

It certainly looks the goods – you’d easily mistake it for a Bentley – and it’s got power to burn, but will it be impressive enough to snatch buyers away from the other players in this niche, but growing, segment? The big Genesis grille gives the GV70 Electrified some styling similarities to a Bentley.

Where possible on lower-output chargers, the Q6’s 800-volt system can separate its pack into twin 400-volt virtual packs; the car will bring both to the same state of charge first, then charge the banks in parallel at up to 135 kw. Plug & Charge connectivity will be fitted from the get-go.
