Opel to introduce new Euro 6 1.6 CDTI diesel in Geneva; 57 mpg US in the Zafira Tourer

At the Geneva Motorshow (7-17 March, 2013) Opel will introduce a new generation diesel engine, the 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC—its cleanest diesel yet—in the seven-seater Zafira Tourer. Equipped with Opel’s “BlueInjection” SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology, the engine already meets Euro 6 emissions limits. (The coming Euro 6 specs target 0.08 g/km NOx for passenger car diesels, compared to 0.18 g/km for Euro 5. Euro 6 levels are still higher than the US Tier 2 Bin 5 NOx standard.)
The new generation 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC unit delivers 100 kW/136 hp and 320 N·m (236 lb-ft) of torque, with fuel consumption of 4.1 l/100 km (57 mpg US) and 109 g/km CO2 in the Zafira Tourer. The new advanced Opel four-cylinder 1.6-liter diesel engine not only sets benchmarks for performance with its high power and torque density but also for refinement with an very low level of noise, vibration and harshness, Opel says.
The new 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC diesel and its engine control unit were entirely developed in-house by a global team of engineers in Turin, Rüsselsheim and the USA.
Featuring closed-loop combustion control and an aluminum block, the new 1.6 CDTI ECOTEC diesel engine will replace existing 1.7-liter engines and certain lower-powered versions of the 2.0-liter range. Class-leading attenuation of noise, vibration and harshness, high power/torque density and low fuel consumption were the main development objectives.
The initial maximum power and torque of 100 kW and 320 N·m respectively are increases, respectively, of 4.6% and 6.6% compared to the 1.7-liter engine of the older generation. Compared to similarly powerful 2.0 liter diesels in the Zafira Tourer, the fuel consumption of new generation 1.6 CDTI has been reduced by up to 10%.
The new 1.6-liter unit further expands the Zafira Tourer’s broad powertrain offer. This comprises five diesel—including a new high performance 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI engine with 143 kW/195 hp—and four gasoline engines, as well as an LPG and a CNG Turbo variant.
Opel expects the new Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTI, which will be launched in 2013, to be particularly popular in many markets where its super-low CO2 emission level of only 109 g/km will make it benefit from a favorable taxation system, e.g. in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Its balance of fuel economy and performance should also make it very successful in further major diesel markets such as Portugal and Spain, Opel suggests.
That is very impressive for a mini-MPV like the Zafira.
It would be even better in a saloon car (or hatchback) like the Astra.
Also, it is very clean in terms of NOx (by European standards, anyway).

When downsized to 1.0 L or less and further improved, it could become a good-superior unit for small and mid-size PHEVs?

This would have been a great choice for the upcoming 2014 Cruze diesel

The Zafira is a vehicle that should be offered in the US. VW has an equivalent, as does Ford. The free market system is a failure if the world's second largest car market does not offer a 7 passenger vehicle that gets 35+ MPG
