Technology group Wärtsilä will power the biggest battery electric ship yet built with its battery-electric propulsion system and waterjets. The uniquely designed vessel will be fully battery powered, with e-motor driven Wärtsilä waterjets as the main propulsors. The order with Wärtsilä was booked in July 2023.

The BYD battery technology also allows for a full charge in less than 5 hours. Buquebus and CTS Auto S.A., The bus can be charged overnight, while the electricity pricing is lower.

It will also be 60% cheaper to operate these buses, compared to traditional diesel-powered buses. BYD’s zero-emission transportation solutions have gained ground in Latin America, and now successfully service markets in many other countries across the region, including Ecuador, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Panama, Uruguay and Argentina.

Pike Research forecasts that the global market for all electric-drive buses—including hybrid, battery electric, and fuel cell buses—grow steadily over the next. The Latin American market will be driven largely by uptake in Brazil, but other countries will also spur adoption, notably Uruguay which recently indicated it.
