2023 MAZDA MX-30 EV arriving in California dealerships this spring; starting at $34,110; 100-mile range

Mazda North American Operations announced that the 2023 Mazda MX-30 EV will be arriving in California dealerships this spring, with a starting price of $34,110. Equipped with Mazda’s e-Skyactiv technology and a 35.5 kWh lithium-ion battery, the MX-30 has an EPA-estimated range of 100 miles on a full charge.

The MX-30’s modern styling is distinctly a Mazda, while also bringing unique design features such as freestyle doors and a floating center console to express the openness of the vehicle. The use of cork in the interior adds warmth and pays homage to Mazda’s heritage as a cork manufacturer.

An 8.8-inch large center display features the latest Mazda Connect system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. All MX-30 models offer many i-Activsense safety features including Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Smart Brake Support, Rear Direction Base Safety (Smart Brake Support-Reverse & Rear Cross-Traffic Braking), Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Driver Attention Alert, and High Beam Control.

The 2023 Mazda MX-30 EV can be equipped with the Premium Plus package that enhances the vehicle with the Bose 12-speaker premium audio, heated steering wheel, 360° View Monitor with front parking sensors, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, and a complimentary three-month trial of SiriusXM satellite radio.

The additional i-Activsense safety features with this package include Blind Spot Assist, which enhances Blind Spot Monitoring by providing steering assist to help keep the vehicle in its own lane if the driver attempts to change lanes while another vehicle is detected in the blind spot. When travelling at speeds below 6 mph, Front Cross Traffic Alert produces an audible and visual alert on the instrument panel to help warn the driver when the front sensors detect vehicles approaching from the front left or right side of the vehicle at speeds above 3 mph.

Mazda will introduce a plug-in hybrid powertrain option for the MX-30 at the Brussels Motor Show 2023 this month. (Earlier post.) Available on the European market this spring, the plug-in hybrid powertrain of Mazda’s compact crossover will feature an electric generator powered by a newly-developed rotary engine.

With a small range like that, nobody will buy that, especially with the cold that we had this year andwith electric heating and lot of snow the range will be half.

This seems to have relatively poor specs for the price especially compared to the Chevrolet Bolt or the soon to be released Chevrolet Equinox SUV with a 300 mile range and a starting MSRP of around $30,000 or even a Nissan Leaf with a starting MSRP of ~$28,000 and a 150 mile range. Anyway, this vehicle would definitely not work for me, as some days I have a 90 mile round trip commute.

@Gorr and sd,
Don't forget the available "plug-in hybrid powertrain of Mazda’s compact crossover will feature an electric generator powered by a newly-developed rotary engine."
We can expect that the rotary-engine powered e-generator will be very light and compact and will make the vehicle lighter and cost a lot less than a long-range BEV like the Model Y long-range version now starting at $66k.

The MX-30 is listed at only $34k, and adding several k's more for the range-extended version would bring the price to below $39k, which is a very good deal, considering that you would have an extra electric generator for use when camping off-road, or for backing your house or shop during extended power outages. A separate power generator for home backup power in the 10-kW range would cost $3k to $5k already, so, in that consideration, you would get a long-range plug-in EV for only a listed price of $34k. This is HALF of what you're paying for the Model Y long range !!!
MORE BANGS FOR THE BUCKS WITH THE MX-30, GUYS!!!

Good grief. This is an embarrassingly inadequate and uncompetitive entrant.

It is nearly 10 years behind the uninspiring Ford Focus Electric.

350 watts per mile can only be described as incompetent in 2023.

This will be the most heavily discounted EV on the market. If you can get by with 100 mile of range, it will be a steal. But it will also have a devastating resale value. Lease only, and for no more than the sub-$100/month that it will be worth, and likely go for.

(In comparison, GM recently offered the 250 mile Bolt for $218/mo)

Davemart,

Apparently, the Mazda MX-30 EV will only be available in California and nothing was said about it being available with a range extender. Also, about the last thing in the world that I would want would be a fuel guzzling rotary engine. As eci pointed out, this car is an embarrassment.

The Lurking Jerk

Yes, although I've been waiting with much anticipation for this, the execution of this neat range extender rotary appears to be badly flubbed. Mazda only sold a few hundred MX-30 EVs in 2022.... I'm worried that this embodiment of this unique rotary is going to kill it.
I don't even like the way they encased the rotary, connecting it to the generator with a belt, in a large enclosure that takes up most of the underside of the trunk. It could have been so much more compact and it should be located under the hood.
