BYD won an order to deliver another 406 battery-electric buses to the Colombian capital of Bogotá, coming shortly after a previous announcement on 17 December of the delivery of the 470 pure electric buses to the city. BYD has exclusively won cumulative orders to supply 1,002 battery-electric buses to the capital of Colombia, Bogotá. At present, BYD has accumulated 1,550 orders for pure electric buses in Colombia, leading the push for bus electrification in Colombia and Latin America. BYD has a market share of more than 96.5%

Johnson Controls has acquired 90% ownership of Colombian battery supplier MAC. Johnson Controls and MAC launched a joint venture in June 2011 to produce and sell lead-acid batteries in the Central and South American regions. The company is the market leader for automotive batteries in South America.

The 183 BYD electric buses will join the 100 electric buses that BYD and local partner Enel brought into Santiago last December, giving BYD a dominant share of more than 60% in the capital’s electric bus market. Along with the 64 pure electric buses in Medellín, Colombia will have a total of 443 BYD electric buses, putting it at the vanguard of Latin America’s rapid push towards public transport electrification. It will also be 60% cheaper to operate these buses, compared to traditional diesel-powered buses.
