PowerGenix, the developer of nickel-zinc (NiZn) rechargeable batteries ( earlier post ), has signed a product evaluation contract with HELLA, a Tier 1 supplier to major automotive manufacturers worldwide. Nickel-zinc batteries are chemically very similar to nickel-cadmium, NiCd.

The Chevy Volt , a plug-in electric car, will have the battery power to take most American drivers to and from work every day without using any gasoline at all. The vehicle will be recharged at night, plugged into a standard home outlet. Toyota also is developing a plug-in hybrid, expected on the road by 2010.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. Toyota Prius modders have already been adding larger batteries so the vehicle can run on battery power. Way to go morons.
