Hurry up MG Cyberster and Tesla Roadster! New Polestar 6 electric drop-top a sell-out success

The battery-powered Polestar 6 roadster has been heralded a huge success after the first batch of 500 cars were snapped up following its official debut in the US.

According to the Sino-Swedish brand, following the Polestar 6 LA Concept edition unveil at Pebble Beach in the US, the first 500 batch of launch cars were purchased by buyers eager to take delivery of the all-electric convertible sports car when production starts in 2026.

According to Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath, additional build slots will be released before the end of this year for those who missed out on the first allocation.

Speaking to Autocar Ingenlath said: “The high interest from our customers shows that a stunning electric roadster like the Polestar 6 has high relevance in the sportscar arena.

“The open-top-plus-electric combination is clearly one that appeals to even the most die-hard petrolheads.”

The success of the Polestar 6, which will hopefully arrive in Australia in 2026, is good news for two other hotly anticipated drop-tops – the MG Cyberster and much delayed Tesla Roadster.

The former is expected to arrive locally in late 2024, around the same time the latter could make its global debut, according to authoritative US publication Automotive News.

The production Polestar 6 keeps both the O2 concept’s retractable hardtop as well as the same bonded aluminium architecture that will also be used on the 2025 Polestar 5.

More good news is it is also powered by the same dual-motor system making 650kW and 900Nm.

That means the Polestar 6 is capable of a 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.2 seconds.

There’s also an 800V electrical architecture, which should allow for faster charging through the use of 350kW ultra-rapid chargers.

Many of those initial buyers were no doubt seduced by the Polestar 6’s sharp angles and sleek and bold low-slung looks that ensure it looks like nothing else on the market.

Curiously, what hasn’t been disclosed is just how much the first buyers will have paid for the first batch of cars, that required a US$25,000 (A$39,000), although it’s rumoured that the first 500 Polestar 6 LA Concept sold for a price tag of around US$200,000 (A$315,000) before local taxes.

It’s not known how much cheaper the more mainstream Polestar 6 will be.
