MotoCzysz Electric Superbike Tackling 2010 Isle of Man TT Zero Race

The battery electric MotoCzysz E1pc superbike is one of the contenders in the 2010 Isle of Man TT Zero race for electric bikes today (Thursday). The iconic Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) Races is one of the longest running (first race in 1907) and dangerous (227 riders have died) motorcycle races in the world.

In 2009, the event held a clean emissions race, TT Zero, conceived with the support and involvement of numerous departments of the Isle of Man Government as part of the Island’s Freedom to Flourish program. The TT Zero consists of one lap around the 37.73 mile (60.7 km) course.

In addition to the usual prize money available to teams and riders, the Isle of Man Government has also created a £10,000 prize fund for the first TT Zero Race team to record a 100 mph lap (160.93 km/h) around the course. This landmark was achieved for the first time by a conventional bike in 1957, when Scotsman Bob McIntyre lapped the TT Course in 22 minutes 24.4 seconds for an overall average of 101.03 mph. Rob Barber and Team Agni recorded a fastest lap time of 25 minutes 53.5 seconds (87.434 mph) in the 2009 clean emissions race.

In the TT Zero practice run on 7 June, the MotoCzysz E1PC took first position of the six contenders with a lap time of 23 minutes 54.84 seconds and a speed of 94.664 mph.

The MotoCzyz bike features a liquid cooled IPM (internal permanent magnet) 75kW (100hp) electric motor that offers a high torque density: 340 N·m continuous/35 kg (250 lb-ft/77 lbs). The MotoCzysz patent-pending cooling system elevates the motor’s nominal power output closer to the motor’s peak power output. The MotoCzysz motor can deliver a continuous 75kW (100hp) and is 93% efficient under continuous heavy load (140C). The motor is available to accommodate either right or left hand chain drive.

The MotoCzysz LQ 240V 85kW Controller is specifically optimized for the motor, in both function and packaging. Accepting 240V and 350+ amps, the sealed Controller contains all the high voltage components and plugs directly into the motor, resulting in a nearly completely wireless (high voltage) system. The Controller receives battery motor and rider command data and adjusts current accordingly. The Controller software has multiple embedded maps for setting or customizing functions like torque contouring and overall power settings.

MotoCzysz utilizes a functioning hot swap battery solution for energy storage and the MotoCzysz eDD system incorporates the latest generation. The new D1g1tal modular battery packs utilize high density, high discharge LiPo (Lithium Polymer) cells. Each 1.25 kWh pack is embedded with monitoring capability that sends data wirelessly via IR (infrared) to a DVMS (d1g1tal Vehicle Management System) and ultimately to the Controller. Additionally, each battery pack houses an LED display that indicates the overall pack as well as individual cell group data.

Each MotoCzysz D1g1tal Battery pack weighs less than 18 lbs and snaps into a suitcase chassis. For the TT Zero, the bike has 10 packs, for a total of 12.5 kWh storage.
