European Parliament calls for fast action to cut non-CO2 climate forcers

Green Car Congress

The European Parliament is calling for fast action to reduce non-CO 2 climate forcers including black carbon soot, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), methane, and ground-level ozone, which together are responsible for nearly half of climate forcing. Because these climate forcers are short-lived, reducing them produces a fast climate response. A follow-up technical meeting will be hosted by Bangladesh in October, with further ministerial meetings likely in the future.

EPA report to Congress finds a strong scientific and technical foundation for mitigating black carbon emissions

Green Car Congress

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has submitted its final Report to Congress on Black Carbon , in response to an October 2009 request from Congress to advance efforts to understand the role of black carbon (BC) in climate change. Effects of BC on climate, as compared to GHGs.

Low-lying and other vulnerable countries calling for fast action on non-CO2 global warming pollutants

Among the non-CO 2 pollutants are hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), methane, tropospheric ozone, and black carbon soot. The next round of UN climate negotiations begins in Cancun today. ” The authors go on to say that reducing the non-CO 2 pollutants can delay additional climate warming by several decades. Technology is already available to reduce these climate-forcing agents, and doing so would produce strong collateral benefits.
