Analysis finds air-quality justification for CNG vehicle conversion in developing cities, despite negative climate impact

Impact pathway approach for modeling policy interventions in (a) air quality and (b) climate impacts. An analysis by a team in Bangladesh found large air quality and associated health benefits accruing to the residents of Dhaka (the capital of Bangladesh) as a result of the rapid conversion of the motor vehicle fleet to CNG. However, CNG conversion was apparently detrimental from a climate change perspective, as CH 4 emissions increased.

International study identifies 14 key measures to reduce methane and black carbon emissions; reduction in projected global mean warming of ~0.5 °C by 2050

Circle areas are proportional to values for (A and B) climate change, (C and D) human health (values for population over age 30), and (E and F) agriculture. Methane is both a potent greenhouse gas and an important precursor to ground-level ozone. Ozone, a key component of smog and also a greenhouse gas, damages crops and human health. Their potential climate impact was assessed by using published global warming potential (GWP) values for each pollutant affected.

One of the UK’s leading climate scientists has presented new research findings on the increasing potential for a 4 degrees Celsius (7.2 °F) Dr Richard Betts, Head of Climate Impacts at the UK Met Office Hadley Centre, presented the findings at a special conference called “ 4 degrees and beyond ” at Oxford University. This high emissions scenario is based on no action being taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, starting in the next few years.

Switzerland’s top ranking reflects strong performance across most issues, especially air quality and climate protection. In general, high scorers exhibit long-standing commitments to protecting public health, preserving natural resources, and decoupling greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from economic activity. India and Bangladesh come in near the bottom of the rankings, with Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Nepal rounding out the bottom five.

The next round of UN climate negotiations begins in Cancun today. ” The authors go on to say that reducing the non-CO 2 pollutants can delay additional climate warming by several decades. Technology is already available to reduce these climate-forcing agents, and doing so would produce strong collateral benefits.
