Preem to begin sales of tall oil renewable diesel blend in Sweden in April

Swedish oil and distribution company Preem AB in April will begin sales of diesel blends containing 15% renewable diesel produced from tall oil as well as 5% biodiesel. (Earlier post.) Tall oil is a byproduct of the kraft (sulfate) processing of pinewood for pulp and paper.

The renewable diesel blend, Preem Evolution Diesel, will provide 16% lower carbon dioxide emissions, according to the company.

The tall oil is processed first in the Sunpine factory in Piteå jointly run by Preem, Sveaskog, Southern and Kiram. It is then refined to diesel specs at Preem’s refinery in Gothenburg.

Currently, Preem has a capacity of about 100,000 m3 (26.4 million gallons US) of crude tall oil, which provides more than 600,000 m3 (159 million gallons US) of finished product Evolution diesel. Preem Evolution Diesel will be available at 366 of Preem filling stations for private motorists and heavy traffic from 9 April.
