New phase of globalization could undermine efforts to reduce CO2 emissions

Green Car Congress

A new study finds that the growth of carbon production from Chinese exports has slowed or reversed, reflecting a “new phase of globalization” between developing countries that could undermine international efforts to reduce emissions. The study, involving researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and colleagues in China and the United States, investigated how complex supply chains are distributing energy-intensive industries and their CO 2 emissions throughout the global South.

2018 Environmental Performance Index: Air quality top public health threat

Green Car Congress

In general, high scorers exhibit long-standing commitments to protecting public health, preserving natural resources, and decoupling greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from economic activity. Low scores on the EPI are indicative of the need for national sustainability efforts on a number of fronts, especially cleaning up air quality, protecting biodiversity, and reducing GHG emissions, said the researchers. Sustainability outcomes among emerging economies remains highly variable.

UN Environment report says national GHG pledges only bring one-third of reductions needed for Paris Agreement

Green Car Congress

The eighth edition of UN Environment’s Emissions Gap report, released ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, finds that national pledges only bring approximately one-third of the reduction in emissions required by 2030 to meet climate targets, with private sector and sub-national action not increasing at a rate that would help close this gap. Given currently available carbon budget estimates, the available global carbon budget for 1.5 ˚C
