Circle areas are proportional to values for (A and B) climate change, (C and D) human health (values for population over age 30), and (E and F) agriculture. A study by an international team of researchers, led by Drew Shindell of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, has identified 14 measures targeting methane and black carbon (BC) emissions that could reduce projected global mean warming ~0.5°C Black carbon Climate Change Emissions

New phase of globalization could undermine efforts to reduce CO2 emissions

Green Car Congress

A new study finds that the growth of carbon production from Chinese exports has slowed or reversed, reflecting a “new phase of globalization” between developing countries that could undermine international efforts to reduce emissions. International trade increased by more than 50% from 2005 to 2015, with approximately 60% of the increase tied to rising exports from developing countries. China Climate Change Emissions

Global CO2 emissions stalled for the third year in a row

Green Car Congress

Emissions from international transport (aviation and shipping) contribute another 3% to the total global GHG emissions. Emissions are increasing in other developing countries: 6% for Indonesia and Malaysia; 9% for Pakistan and 12% for the Philippines. Climate Change Emissions

UN Environment report says national GHG pledges only bring one-third of reductions needed for Paris Agreement

Green Car Congress

The eighth edition of UN Environment’s Emissions Gap report, released ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, finds that national pledges only bring approximately one-third of the reduction in emissions required by 2030 to meet climate targets, with private sector and sub-national action not increasing at a rate that would help close this gap. Given currently available carbon budget estimates, the available global carbon budget for 1.5 ˚C

IEA working paper highlights potential role of natural gas in reducing global road transport CO2

Green Car Congress

A new working paper published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) concludes that natural gas can play a significant role in cutting on-road vehicle carbon dioxide emissions, but that over the long term there will need to be a commitment to transition to very low CO 2. Vehicle and fuel technology for natural gas is available today and relatively affordable, particularly in comparison with other alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs).

2018 Environmental Performance Index: Air quality top public health threat

Green Car Congress

Switzerland’s top ranking reflects strong performance across most issues, especially air quality and climate protection. Burundi, Central African Republic, Madagascar, the Bahamas, and Latvia slipped significantly in environmental performance, largely due to sub-par performance on climate change. Substantial populations still suffer from poor air quality, most notably in India, China, and Pakistan.
