The Tata Punch EV is launched in India and is priced between Rs 10.99 and Rs 14.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Punch is the second electric SUV from Tata and the fourth all-electric vehicle.
Tata Punch is the first vehicle built on Tata’s Pure EV platform, known as “Acti. EV”(Advanced Connected Tech-Intelligent Electric Vehicle). Tata’s next EVs will be powered by this new platform.
Let’s take a closer look at the car in detail.
Tata Punch EV: What’s On The Outside
The Tata Punch EV’s design was greatly influenced by the Tata Nexon EV, and from the front, it resembles a smaller Nexon EV. The grille area is blocked off as in typical EVs and an extended LED DRL bar is located at the front of the bonnet. The primary headlamp cluster, which is split-lighting and has fog lamps and triangle projector LED headlights is located below the LED DRL bar.
The brand-new bumper has a large air dam with a fake silver skid plate and vertical slats on the plastic cladding. In addition, the Punch EV is the first Tata EV to be equipped with a frunk (storage area beneath the hood) and a front charging port.
The Punch EV has a dual-tone bumper, Y-shaped brake lights, and a roof-mounted spoiler in the back. With a new set of 16-inch alloy wheels, the Tata Punch EV has disc brakes on all four wheels in contrast to the ICE version’s drum brakes on the back wheels.
Tata Punch EV: What’s On The Inside
The Tata Punch EV’s interior has the brand-new, LED two-spoke steering wheel we usually see on the other SUVs from Tata. While the lower-end models are expected to get a 7.0-inch infotainment screen and a digital instrument cluster, the higher-end model gets a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.
The Punch EV comes with a sunroof, cruise control, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, leatherette seats, and the new Arcade.ev app suite, which promises better connectivity and over-the-air updates. The Punch EV is equipped with six airbags, ABS, ESC, a blind view monitor, three-point seat belts for every seat, ISOFIX mounts, and an SOS increasing the safety of the vehicle.
Tata Punch EV: How Far It Goes
For the Tata Punch EV, Tata offers two different battery options for the Punch EV, just like it does for all other EVs. With a 25kWh battery pack that generates 82 PS of power and 114 Nm of peak torque, the medium-range models of the car can attain a high speed of 110 km/h.
With a 35kWh battery that produces 122 PS of power and 190 Nm of peak torque, the long-range versions of the automobile can achieve a high speed of 140 km/h. The long-range versions are said to have a claimed range of 421 km, while the medium-range versions claim a range of 315 km.
The Punch EV supports 50 kW DC fast charging capabilities, allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80% in just 56 minutes. The Punch EV has two AC chargers (7.2 kW and 3.3 kW) that may be used for home charging.
It will take 3.6 hours with the 7.2 kW charger to charge the 25 kWh version and 5 hours to charge the 35 kWh version. Also, It will take 9.4 hours with the 3.3 kW charger to charge the 25 kWh version and 13.5 hours to charge the 35 kWh version.
The All New Acti.EV Architecture
Tata revealed the underlying Acti.EV architecture before unveiling the Tata Punch EV. Performance, technology, modularity, and effective use of space are the four main pillars of Tata’s brand-new EV platform.
Tata claims that Acti.EV Architecture provides a 10% increase in battery capacity, resulting in a 300–600 km range. The platform supports all-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. The Acti.EV platform may be charged using an AC fast charger (7.2 kW to 11 kW) or a DC fast charger (up to 150 kW), which can provide a 100 km range for the battery in about 10 minutes.
Additionally, 5G connection and Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Load (V2L) charging are supported as well.
Additionally, the Acti.EV architecture enables many body designs which adhere to future Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP safety requirements, in addition to its scalability for Level 2 and Level 2+ ADAS. Like most of the EV platforms, Acti.EV also has a flat floor, which maximises interior capacity and storage while lowering the centre of gravity.
In its class, the Tata Punch EV will directly compete with the Citroen eC3 and act as a high-end substitute for the MG Comet EV and Tata Tiago EV.
