Balqon to build electric buses in China with SAIG

California-based Balqon Corporation, a developer of heavy-duty electric vehicles, drive systems and lithium battery storage devices (earlier post), has entered into a Joint Development Agreement with China-based Sichuan Automobile Industry Co., Ltd (SAIG) to manufacture inner-city electric buses. Under this Agreement, SAIG purchased the Balqon electric drive system for integration into a 22-foot bus chassis.

The agreement includes purchase of Balqon’s proven electric drive system, featuring its proprietary ZEVQON Flux Vector AC controller (earlier post), and HIQAP high-energy lithium-ion battery packs (earlier post). Both companies will provide engineering resources for integration, testing and certification of the product for on-road use in China and North America.

ZEVQON EV controllers represent a complete line of AC inverters ranging in power from 20 kW to 240 kW, designed for use in electric vehicles ranging in size from a small utility vehicle to 30 ton on-road truck. The new line of electric motor controllers are smaller in size, featuring liquid cooling, regenerative braking and compliance to automotive J1939 Can Bus communication protocol.

Sichuan Automobile Industry Co. Ltd is a subsidiary of Fulin Group which owns and operates more than 5,000 diesel inner-city buses in West China and is recently the recipient of several grants from the Chinese government to produce low emission vehicles.

Fulin Group has five subsidiaries that include bus manufacturing, passenger car manufacturing, engine assembly plant, distribution and a service company that operates inner-city buses.
