BYD to unveil electrified pickup truck at Beijing Auto Show

BYD is expected to unveil its electrified pickup truck at the Beijing Auto Show on April 25. The Chinese automaker revealed a few details about its first pickup truck to pique people’s interest before the unveiling.

BYD officially announced that its upcoming electrified pickup truck will be called the Shark. Given that the automaker’s other electric vehicles (EVs) are called the Seal and Dolphin, BYD’s pickup truck definitely follows the sea animal theme.

The Asian automaker released teasers for the pickup truck, revealing its name and confirming that it will use DMO (Dual-Mode Super Hybrid All-Terrain Off-Road Platform) technology. Earlier this month, tests conducted on the BYD Shark in Mexico hinted that it would use the DMO platform, initially introduced to complement the company’s Fang Cheng Bao brand.

The BYD Shark’s promos have been in English, hinting that the electrified pickup truck will be built for the overseas market. Pictures from the tests conducted in Mexico hint that the BYD Shark will go to right-hand-drive markets first, like Australia and South Africa. The Chinese automaker has established its brand in Australia with Dolphin and Seal EVs.

The BYD Shark tested in Mexico also revealed that the upcoming pickup truck will be a plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV). As such, Shark is a hybrid vehicle but falls under the new energy vehicle category. BYD will reportedly equip the Shark pickup truck with a 31.9 kWh Blade battery, also used on the Leopard 5.
