Charging an electric vehicle in Australia is about to get easier: Ampol AmpCharge is coming to a shopping centre near you

Ampol is the first petrol station-based charging supplier to leave the fuel forecourt, with the brand to install its high-speed charging stations at shopping centres across the country, meaning that charging an electric vehicle in Australia is about to get easier.

The brand has partnered with landlord giant Mirvac in a deal that will see 72 charging stations rolled out across retail precincts from the end of 2023.

Ampol’s AmpCharge stations generally allow for 150kW fast charging, but an upgrade to 300kW charging is occurring at several sites already. It’s not yet known exactly what charging infrastructure will be installed as part of the brand’s partnership with Mirvac.

It is also a pay-as-you go program, accessed through the AmpCharge app, with fluctuating pricing that’s usually around $0.69c per kWh.

“This partnership with Mirvac will allow us to expand our offer beyond the forecourt to destinations like Mirvac’s leading property network. We look forward to commencing roll-out of this infrastructure over the coming months,” says Brent Merrick, General Manager, International and New Business at Ampol.

The rollout forms part of Ampol’s commitment to install 300 EV chargers at more than 100 sites across Australia, and follows Mirvac’s findings that the popularity of its existing charging network has increased by 60 per cent over the past 12 months.
