Opinion: Why Buffett Bet A Billion On Solar: Miles Per Acre Per Year

Green Car Congress

During the late innings of the ICE-age (as in the Internal Combustion Engine age) it has become clear that feeding gasoline and diesel to the next billion new cars is not going to be easy, or cheap. Coal still supplies more power in the US than anything else, with natural gas next. The vision is fuelled by the fear of climate change and the need to find green alternatives to dirty coal, unpopular nuclear power and unreliable gas imports from Russia. Are we going to burn more oil, natural gas, or (gasp) coal to produce it? So, the used batteries are almost arbitrarily cheap since an arbitrarily large fraction of their cost of production can be loaded on their use in transportation. The coal ash is known to have many toxic metals and other pollutants.

Furthermore, changing the battery pack on say a Toyota Prius often costs a fortune, at least in most European countries, so such cars better be VERY cheap, but they’re not. Even if you charge your EV with electricity made from coal fired generators you reduce your car’s pollution by half. Li is now the same cost of AGM, sealed lead batteries and soon will be as cheap as and replace lead batteries in EV’s because they weight 1/3-1/4 the weight/cap.
