Researchers suggests high level of air pollution in Northern Italy a co-factor in COVID-19 mortality rate

Green Car Congress

Researchers from the University of Siena in Italy and Aarhus University in Denmark are suggesting that the high level of pollution in Northern Italy should be considered an additional co-factor of the high level of COVID-19 fatalities recorded in that area. An open-access paper on their work is published in the journal Environmental Pollution. Moreover, a prolonged exposure to air pollution leads to a chronic inflammatory stimulus, even in young and healthy subjects.

International study finds air pollution leads to millions of hospital visits for asthma attacks worldwide

Green Car Congress

They used epidemiological health impact functions combined with data describing population, baseline asthma incidence and prevalence, and pollutant concentrations. This is the first global study of the potential impacts of air pollution on serious asthma attacks that cause people to visit emergency rooms in hospitals around the world. The research team said that one way to reduce pollutants quickly would be to target emissions from cars, especially in big cities.

Study finds power law scaling relationship between urban population and NO2 pollution

Green Car Congress

The approximate linear relationship for each region is notable, suggesting that the dependence of urban NO 2 pollution upon population follows a power law scaling with population. The same regions saw various degrees of pollution increases in cities with population of 10 million people: 2.55

NASA satellite images highlight US air quality improvement with reduction of NO2

Green Car Congress

New NASA satellite images released this week demonstrate the reduction of air pollution across the US. After ten years in orbit, the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) on NASA’s Aura satellite has been in orbit sufficiently long to show that people in major US cities are breathing less nitrogen dioxide. Nitrogen dioxide is one of the six common pollutants regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to protect human health.

Satellite method provides insight into ozone-NOx-VOCs sensitivity for different locations

Ozone pollution near Earth’s surface is one of the main ingredients of summertime smog. Determining effective strategies for mitigating surface ozone (O 3 ) pollution requires knowledge of the relative ambient concentrations of its precursors, NO x , and VOCs.

DISCOVER-AQ project to begin flights to enhance measurement of ground-level air-quality from space

Green Car Congress

The flights will be supported by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and will aid EPA in monitoring pollutants. The project—Deriving Information on Surface conditions from Column and Vertically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality ( DISCOVER-AQ )—will help researchers develop a three-dimensional view of how air pollutants are distributed and move between different levels of the atmosphere throughout the day.
