Volkswagen Group France et la Société Nouvelle d’Affinage des Métaux (SNAM) signed a partnership agreement through which the hybrid and EV batteries from group brands—Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA and Volkswagen Utilities—will be recycled in the two French factories owned by SNAM, Saint-Quentin-Fallavier (Isère) and Viviez (Aveyron).

The new hybrid system, which combines a gasoline direct injection V6 from Audi with an electric motor and eight-speed automatic transmission, uses a NiMH battery pack and can cruise at high speed on electric power, although only for about 2 km. Porsche is also developing a parallel hybrid variant of the Cayenne.

The downside is the cost associated for the two large electric motors and associated power electronics. Other types of hybrid systems are in earlier stages of development and deployment.
