Audi will be the first to test its automated driving technology on the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway in Tampa, Florida—which recently was designated as an automated driving and connected car test bed—using an Audi A7 equipped to handle piloted driving functions on freeway conditions up to 40 mph (64 km/h).

Audi will be the first company to receive a newly established autonomous driving permit issued by California. Audi has conducted research over tens of thousands of miles in Europe and various US states, where such testing is permitted. Audi envisions this technology could be ready for consumer introduction within five years.

The Audi e-tron (4,321), Porsche Taycan (3,002), Hyundai Kona (2,192), Tesla Model X (1,730), and Tesla Model S (1,633) rounded out the Top 10 EVs that were most registered in the United States from January to April 2021. The Golden State corresponded to 38% of new EV registrations in Q1 2021, while Florida comprised 7.2%.

Tesla offered to help Porsche with battery management through Audi contacts years ago, but Porsche management at the time rejected any external help, saying it could handle everything internally, the source noted. Around three years ago, Porsche asked Tesla through Audi contacts if they could help then, but at the time, Tesla declined.
