BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) continued to lead China's new energy vehicle (NEV) market in February, even as its sales fell from a year earlier.

BYD had retail sales of 118,802 passenger NEVs in China in February, topping the NEV market with a 30.6 percent share, according to a ranking released on March 11 by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The NEV maker was the only one with a share of more than 30 percent, despite a 32.8 percent year-on-year drop in retail sales.

BYD released figures earlier this month showing it sold 122,311 NEVs in February, down 36.84 percent year-on-year and down 39.30 percent from January. The figures are wholesale sales and include both passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

China's passenger NEVs sold 388,000 units at retail in February, 11.6 percent lower than a year earlier and 42.1 percent lower than in January, according to data released by the CPCA on March 8.

Geely Auto had retail sales of 31,364 NEVs in China in February, up 43.9 percent from a year ago, and ranked second with an 8.1 percent share.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) had retail sales of 30,141 units in China in February, down 11.1 percent year-on-year, and ranked third with a 7.8 percent share.

It's worth noting that in China, NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel-cell vehicles. BYD and Geely make PHEVs and BEVs, while Tesla only makes BEVs.

Tesla sold 60,365 China-made vehicles in February, including 30,224 vehicles exported, according to CPCA data released earlier this month.

(NASDAQ: LI) ranked No. 7 in China's NEV market in February with 20,251 retail sales and a 5.2 percent share.

The company's main selling models are the Li L7, Li L8 and Li L9, three extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), which are PHEVs. It launched the Li Mega BEV on March 1, and deliveries started on March 11.

(NYSE: NIO) was No. 10 in China's NEV market in February with retail sales of 8,132 units and a 2.1 percent share. The company, like Tesla, only makes BEVs.

In the January-February period, BYD ranked No. 1 in China's NEV market with 325,706 retail sales and 30.8 percent share.

Tesla ranked fourth in China's NEV market in January-February with 70,022 retail sales and a 6.6 percent share.

In the overall passenger car market, including traditional fuel vehicles, BYD was No. 1 in the retail ranking with a 10.8 percent share in February.

FAW-Volkswagen was second with 92,657 retail sales and 8.4 percent share. Geely was third with 87,025 retail sales and 7.9 percent share.

In January-February, BYD was No. 1 in the overall passenger car market with 10.4 percent share. Changan was No. 2 with 281,054 retail sales and 8.9 percent share. Geely was No. 3 with 8.7 percent share.
