Add one more to the list of hybrid cars that have been sent off to the great gasoline-electric graveyard in the sky. Nissan will end production of its Altima Hybrid sedan after the 2011 model year.

Ford launched the Escape Hybrid as a 2005 model (its Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute siblings showed up a bit later), so The General had some catching up to do in the green-car department. Nissan introduced the Altima Hybrid as a 2007 model (and using licensed Toyota hardware), though it disappeared quickly and without leaving much trace.

EcoBoost provides customers up to 20% improvement in fuel economy and a 15% reduction in emissions versus larger-displacement engines. For the full calendar year, Ford hybrid sales totaled 33,502, a new record and up 72% versus a year ago. For the year, GM hybrid sales increased 30% from the year before to 16,142 units.

There is more to Dan Neil's recent LA Times column than a favorable review of yet another gasoline-only hybrid. He likes the Nissan Altima Hybrid well enough. Calls it a "Camry hybrid in tight jeans." More important, Neil says, is that it comes from an automaker that had scoffed at "hybridization."

When sales of the Civic Hybrid started to flag, Honda introduced the Insight Hybrid earlier this year. It developed turbocharged direct injection technology for diesel engines and has a wide range of TDI powertrains. It has also launched flexible fuel vehicles in Brazil. The PROLOGUE puts the internal combustion engine up front and runs on diesel, while the RC uses petrol with the electric motor going at the back. Similar to the Chevy Volt concept, the RC can run solely on electric power for extended periods with a hybrid powertrain providing extra range when needed.
