These projects put more than 9,000 alternative fuel and energy-efficient light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles on the road, and establish 542 refueling locations across the country. The project will deploy 502 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles through 119 public and private fleets throughout the state.

The original intent of building the beltway was to enable heavy-duty vehicles to bypass the densely populated neighborhoods, and thereby ease traffic congestion in the inner-city roads. The change in congestion was transient, as gasoline–ethanol passenger cars responded by filling the space the diesel trucks left behind.

The US Department of Energy has issued a $300-million Funding Opportunity Announcement ( DE-PS26-09NT01236-04 ) for applications for cost-shared projects that expand the use of alternative fueled vehicles and advanced technology vehicles. The other areas of interest include: Refueling Infrastructure for alternative fuels.

In addition, the report says, research suggests that for plug-ins to be cost-effective relative to gasoline vehicles the price of batteries must come down significantly and gasoline prices must be high relative to electricity.

One can be quite encouraged by the 30 odd alternative fuel cars of all shapes and sizes. The production of Neighborhood Electric Vehicles and electric bicycles is picking up. Grumbling about her gasoline-powered altfuel car remained unspoken. A real car, by any measure. I hope to find out more tomorrow.

The alternative-fuel car evolved to reduce exhaust emissions and other problems derived from burning fossil fuels. The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix.
