Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory, with colleagues from Lawrence Berkeley, Oak Ridge, and National Renewable Energy labs, and the University of Tennessee, have published a comprehensive analysis of the total cost of ownership (TCO) for 12 sizes of vehicles ranging from compact sedans up to Class 8 tractors with sleeper cabs.

Heavy-duty diesel vehicles using mixing controlled compression ignition (MCCI), the most common ignition and combustion strategies for heavy-duty diesel engines, contribute significantly to the emissions of GHG, oxides of nitrogen (NO x ), and particular matter (PM) and are subject to stringent emission standards. An IntelliChoice.com survey finds that most 2009 US hybrid and clean diesel cars, trucks and SUVs deliver a lower total cost of ownership compared to gasoline versions of the same (or comparable) vehicles. the Ford Escape Hybrid is compared against the conventional, gasoline-fueled Ford Escape. Tax credits matter.

A poll conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of Audi of America found that a majority of American drivers would support government initiatives aimed at spurring clean diesel vehicle sales in the US. But, we argue that diesel needs an even playing field set by state and federal governments. We need to level the playing field.
