The Environment Committee of the European Parliament voted to include CO 2 emissions from the maritime sector in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). In the legislative report approved (62 votes to 3 and 13 abstentions), the EP Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee welcomed the proposal but wanted to see more ambition and voted to include ships of 5000 gross tonnage and above in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).

NASA and DLR to conduct joint flight tests on alternative fuel emissions with focus on ice crystals

The focus will be on alternative fuel emissions and the characterisation of ice crystals in condensation trails (contrails), using biofuel as an example. The first joint DLR/NASA flights, which were conducted from Palmdale, California in 2014, showed that adding 50% alternative fuel for cruising flight reduces the soot particle emissions of an aircraft engine by 50 to 70%, compared to the combustion of pure kerosene.

ICCT: IMO committee agrees to establish first climate framework for international shipping
