The Environment Committee of the European Parliament voted to include CO 2 emissions from the maritime sector in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). 20% of the revenues under the Fund shall be used to contribute to protecting, restoring and efficiently managing marine ecosystems impacted by global warming.

Adopted in 2014, AFID ( Directive 2014/94/EU ) creates the framework for the development of an alternative fuels infrastructure in Europe, including electricity for electric vehicles as well as hydrogen for fuel cells and LNG for shipping. Otherwise, even the current reduction targets in fighting climate change are at risk.

Well-to-Propeller GHG emissions results for marine alternative fuels. DNV GL has released a position paper on the future alternative fuel mix for global shipping. The global merchant fleet currently consumes around 330 million tonnes of fuel annually, 80-85 per cent of which is residual fuel with high sulfur content.

Phase two will narrow down the most promising alternative fuel solutions. From 2013 onwards, the partners will look at scaling-up the alternative fuel production process to achieve sustainable quantities of aviation fuel for commercial use.
