Veolia Transportation is launching Baltimore’s first propane autogas taxi fleet. The company has also installed an autogas fueling station in Baltimore to serve 50 Checker and Yellow taxis. Veolia Transportation is Baltimore City’s largest operator of taxicab services. Propane autogas is the most widely used alternative fuel in the world.

UPS to add 40 series hydraulic hybrid vehicles to its fleet

UPS is deploying 40 new medium-duty series hydraulic hybrid vehicles (HHVs): 20 in Baltimore and 20 in Atlanta. Developed by Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) and Parker Hannifin Corporation ( earlier post ), the parcel delivery vehicles can achieve up to 35% improved fuel economy and up to 30% CO 2 emissions reduction over traditional diesel-powered vehicles that use automatic transmissions in stop-and-go applications.

The pilot will integrate electric vehicle technology and charging infrastructure into the federal fleet and federal buildings to the best ways to use the technology in the federal fleet. The 116 electric plug-in vehicles being deployed in the pilot are expected to annually save almost 29,000 gallons of gas, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 257 metric tons, and save taxpayers almost $116,000 in fuel costs.

Wal-Mart Testing Two Different Hybrid Systems and Three Alt Fuels on Class 8 Trucks

The company also will test three different alternative fuels—Reclaimed Grease Fuel; B20 biodiesel; and liquefied natural gas—in its heavy-duty trucks. This technology could help Wal-Mart increase its fleet efficiency by up to 25%. The five Peterbilt Model 386 heavy duty diesel-electric hybrids are being tested in Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Southern California and the Baltimore/Washington DC region.
