Revealed! The US super-SUV patented in Australia

The southern California electric vehicle start-up Mullen Autotmotive has been granted design patents in Australia for its luxury Five SUV, signalling its intent to eventually sell the vehicle here.

Mullen has confirmed seven design patents have been granted in Australia among 136 filed globally, including 19 in the USA and 117 overseas.

All up it has lodged patent applications in 24 countries,  including New Zealand as well as Australia in this region.

We’ve reproduced the design Mullen successfully registered in Australia for the Five on December 12 2021, including front three-quarter, front, side and rear perspective represented in line drawings, as well as the cockpit, seats, extendable visor and alloy wheel designs.

“We fully intend to make the Mullen Five available around the world, and these patents, including filings in 24 international countries, show our intended commitment to do so,” said David Michery, CEO and chairman of Mullen Automotive.

The patent applications filed by Mullen are related to the design and styling of the Five, covering its exterior and interior design. They include areas such as vehicle bodywork, headlights/taillights, doors, mirrors, rims, headliners, seats and steering.

No timeline for roll-out of the Five globally was given and it’s actually not yet on sale in the USA yet.

A concept version of the Five was first revealed at the LA auto show in November 2021 with a promise to commence production in the USA in late 2023 and start deliveries in the second quarter of 2024.

Built on a skateboard platform, Mullen says the Five will be fitted with a 95kWh battery pack, have a 520km range and a top speed of 250km/h.

Since then a new higher performance RS version with a claimed 800kW output and 1.95 sec 0-60mph time has been announced. Plans for a cargo van and solid state battery development have also been announced. It became a publicly traded company last November.

A promotional test drive tour for the Five starts in the third quarter of 2022 in the USA. The launch price start at US$55,000 ($80,000 approx) and reservations are being offered at US$100 ($145) refundable.

If you’re abit sceptical about tlal this, we get it. Mullen’s been out there before making bold claims. Like these we reported in 2020. There’s a rundown on Mullen’s background in this story too.
