Study Finds Strong Synergy Between Spark Ignition Engine Downsizing and Low-to-Moderate Alcohol Blend Fuels

A study by engineers from Mahle Powertrain Ltd and BP found strong synergy between spark ignition (SI) engine downsizing and fuel containing low-to-moderate amounts of alcohol, including ethanol and butanol. When alcohol was added to the blend, fuel consumption over the drive cycle increased in direct proportion to the reduction in calorific value of the fuel. The addition of alcohol did not improve excess air tolerance.

Vulcanol is fuel-grade methanol, a clean burning, high-octane fuel that can be blended with gasoline for automobiles and used in the production of biodiesel or fuel ethers (DME, MTBE, OME etc.). Because of China’s coal reserves, the country has viewed methanol as a viable alternative for gasoline; methanol and methanol-blended gasoline are used in more than 20 provinces. Their results showed that in comparison with gasoline mode, CO emitted in methanol mode decreased 11.2%.

The growth in hydrous ethanol, which uses a blend of 94-95% ethanol to 5-6% water, rapidly increased during the 1980s, with consumption peaking in 1989.
