Using existing fish processing plants, kelp and fish waste can be turned into a diesel-like fuel to power generators or fishing boats in rural, coastal Alaska, according to a team from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). In search of a cheaper, sustainable fuel, researchers at PNNL turned to two plentiful marine resources in Alaska: kelp and fish processing waste. —“ Kelp Energy Products and Marine Renewable Energy for Coastal Alaska Communities ”.

Proterra electric bus to begin 4-month trial in Anchorage, Alaska next week

PTD partnered with MOA’s Solid Waste Services (SWS) to lease the bus. The Municipality of Anchorage’s (MOA) Public Transportation Department (PTD) will put a new 40-foot Proterra Catalyst E2 electric/battery powered bus on trial next week. The bus will begin serving routes for the general public for a four-month trial period.

Gevo produces first cellulosic renewable jet fuel specified for use on commercial airline flights

Gevo successfully adapted its patented technologies to convert cellulosic sugars derived from wood waste into renewable isobutanol, which was then further converted into Gevo’s Alcohol-to-Jet fuel (ATJ) fuel. Alaska Airlines is expected to fly the first commercial flight using this cellulosic jet fuel in the next few months.
