Ford to apply start-stop technology to non-hybrid vehicles in North America in 2012

When Auto Start-Stop debuts in North America, it will be available on gasoline-powered cars and utilities with either a manual or automatic transmission as well as vehicles that use Ford’s patented dual-clutch six-speed automatic transmission. Ford’s patented new Auto Start-Stop system for gasoline engines will improve fuel economy for most drivers by at least 4%. A similar system has been installed on more than 170,000 gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles Ford has sold since 2004.

Hybrid” plug-in hybrid system—the last offering all-electric trips of up to 60 km (37 miles) at speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph). The Renault gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid system supports 60 km of electric range plus extended range due to the gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine. The chief feature of the concept lies in the clutch casing which houses a permanent magnet electric motor (axial flux discoid motor in the case of the prototype).
