BYDās Australian retail distributor, EVDirect.com has announced that it will be bringing 100,000 EV chargers to Australia and says the first batch has already being manufactured.
According to EVDirect.com CEO, Luke Todd, these chargers will be some of the most affordable available to EV drivers in the country. This was shared in a post on Linkedin.
ā#EVSwitch for Australia is underway. The first of 100,000 x 7kW, high quality wifi connected electric vehicle chargers for Australia has been completed. These are top range chargers that EVSwitch is bringing to Australia and making them available for extremely affordable prices.ā
At a starting price of $499, the new chargers will fall under the EVSwitch brand. These offer 7 kW of single-phase charging.Ā
From some of the photos shared on Linkedin, it appears that these units will be tethered and wonāt require a separate type 2 cable for EV charging.
Based on this, it appears that these units are likely to be destined for home charging purposes as many commercial options require a separate type 2 charging cable by EV drivers.Ā
According to Todd, the new offering will be offered with an app that is open source to help integrate with existing charging networks. This also suggests that there could be other commercial products from EVSwitch on the horizon.
When it comes to options for home charging, popular offerings are currently available from Tesla, Zappi, Schneider, Fronius, ABB, Occular and many others.
The news of the new charger comes as Australiaās EV uptake has surpassed 100,000 vehicles in the fleet. This is only going to be supercharged with the availability of more affordable EVs along the way.
BYD is planning multiple model launches along with brands like MG and Ora also in the mix to bring EVs that fall under $45,000, locally.
Other recent announcements that point to a significant ramp-up of EVs include the newly announced BYD Megacentres. These will form part of this growth along with the dedicated BYD service and fulfilment centres to drive more EVs onto Australian roads.
To support more EVs, more chargers are needed and since the majority of the charging is done at home for those with off-street parking, these could be a new option for owners and landlords to consider.
The website for the EVSwitch product will be launching on August 31 for those interested in preordering a unit with the first deliveries to happen in Q4 2023.
Having more affordable charging options will be welcomed by many drivers looking at making the switch.
