The outrageous BYD Yangwang U8 luxury SUV is headed for Australia. Local BYD importer Luke Todd has confirmed the deal is done and examples of the 880kW heavy duty off-roader could roll into local showrooms as soon as late 2025. 2024 BYD Seal U electric SUV appears as Australian launch looms 2023 Yangwang U8.

The BYD Tang is already due for an upgrade in Europe. Despite launching in Europe less than a year ago, BYD ‘s Tang is getting a bigger battery for more range and more. Although BYD launched its Tang EV in Norway in 2020, the electric SUV began rolling out in Germany, the Netherlands, and other major European markets last year.

The first ground-up EV from the Chinese-owned British brand – the MG ZS electric SUV is build on the architecture of a petrol vehicle – the MG4 could be a major player at the entry-level end of the EV market. Charging can be done at up to 140kW on a DC charger, which MG claims will charge it from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 28 minutes.

Smart vehicles were sold in Australia from 2003 until 2015 when the brand was axed following poor sales of its sole model, the ForTwo city car, but now it’s hoped by execs that the availability of two small all-electric SUVs will see the brand flourish Down Under. Both can be DC charged at a rate of 150kW.

Due to having a relatively modest battery for a large-ish SUV (64 kWh usable), and underwhelming efficiency, the real-world range is not class leading, but may be enough for some folks, given Norway’s well developed DC infrastructure. Let’s see how it gets on. December should see closer to 95% than 90%, for the first time.
