This marks the first availability of e-POWER technology for consumers, marking a milestone in the electrification strategy under Nissan Intelligent Mobility. e-POWER borrows from the EV technology in the Nissan LEAF.

Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and colleagues have demonstrated that permanent magnets produced by additive manufacturing can outperform bonded magnets made using traditional techniques while conserving critical materials. NdFeB magnets are used in a range of applications from computer hard drives and headphones to clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles and wind turbines.

Earlier this week, the Québec National Assembly unanimously adopted Bill 104, a zero-emission vehicle standard. Automakers that sell or lease a yearly average of more than 4,500 new vehicles (all light models combined) will be subject to the ZEV standard. In its 2015-2020 Transportation Electrification Action Plan, Québec set a target of 100,000 registered plug-in vehicles by 2020.

The BMW Group has now delivered more than 100,000 purely electric-powered cars and plug-in hybrids to customers worldwide since the launch of BMW i in November 2013. The BMW i3 alone has reached a figure of more than 60,000 units, making it the most successful electric vehicle in the premium compact segment. More than 80% of BMW i3 customers worldwide are new to BMW. The BMW i8 ranks first among electrified sports cars, with more than 10,000 delivered since the middle of 2014.

Wrightspeed, the leading manufacturer of range-extended electric vehicle (REV) powertrains for heavy-duty applications, and The Ratto Group, a Santa Rosa, California-based refuse, yard waste and recycling collection and processing company, unveiled the first commercial application of a range-extended electric refuse truck. Ratto and Wrightspeed will roll out 15 Route-equipped trucks—retrofits of trucks in Ratto’s fleet—over the next 12 months to meet community needs.

Aqua Metals has produced the first AquaRefined lead at its AquaRefinery in McCarran, Nevada. AquaRefining is a water-based, room-temperature process that is the only clean lead recycling method for lead-acid batteries (LAB). Earlier post.). Through its own on-site assay, Aqua Metals has verified that the lead produced in the AquaRefining module is more than 99.99% pure.

HARMAN International and Airbiquity, a provider of connected vehicle services, announced the first automotive grade end-to-end intrusion detection system (IDS) for connected vehicles at TU-Automotive Europe 2016 in Munich, Germany. With the increasing dependency on software to power vehicle systems and features, cybersecurity has become a threat to connected vehicles and the introduction of new driving assistance, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and autonomous driving capabilities.

Researchers at Stanford University have demonstrated solar water splitting by photovoltaic-electrolysis with a solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of more than 30%—a new record. The prior record was 24.4%. An open-access paper on their work is published in the journal Nature Communications.

A test deployment of a new hub-and-shuttle urban mobility system will take place on the University of Michigan’s North Campus. Its creators say the proposed system could deliver riders to their destinations in as little as half the time of the existing bus system at a lower cost, eventually using a fleet of autonomous shared vehicles. The limited test deployment would likely mark the world’s first on-the-ground implementation of such a system.

After two years of hard work and planning, the historical Ford Rouge Center has achieved true landfill-free status. It is the company’s largest complex to send zero waste to landfill. When a facility is given landfill-free status, it means absolutely no manufacturing waste from the facility goes to any landfills. The center is now able to keep more than 14 million pounds of waste out of landfills—enough to fill the beds of more than 4,400 Ford F-150 trucks.

FMC Corporation announced a new long-term supply agreement with Nemaska Lithium , Inc. Under the agreement Nemaska will provide FMC with 8,000 metric tons per year of lithium carbonate beginning in mid-2018. Based in Quebec, Canada, Nemaska Lithium, Inc. is constructing new lithium production capabilities of 28,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent. Nemaska is developing a spodumene lithium hard rock deposit.

Diesel PM emissions from trucks serving the Port of Oakland, California declined 98% between 2005 and 2015, according to an emissions inventory released by the Port. In that same timeframe, ship emissions dropped 75%. The results indicate the Port is advancing its 2008 commitment to reduce seaport-related diesel health risk by 85% by the year 2020. The Port said that an analysis of the 2015 Emissions Inventory shows a 76% decrease in total diesel emissions at the Oakland Seaport.

In August, Berlin-based Dalia Research conducted an EU-wide survey to find out the demand for electric vehicles (EV) among Europeans. The results show that 58% of Europeans would consider purchasing an electric vehicle. Approximately 1% of respondents say they already own one, matching the current estimate of electric vehicle sales in Europe.

Flint, Michigan’s Mass Transportation Authority recently unveiled a Proterra Hydrogen Fuel Cell bus prototype; the vehicle is in Flint for a year and is on a pilot/test program. Part of the study will be to see how the bus tests in a cold environment as it has only been run in warmer climates. The bus is the result of a collaborative partnership under the National Fuel Cell Bus Program, a Federal Transit Administration program investing in zero emission hydrogen fuel cell buses.

Maxwell Technologies, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of ultracapacitor-based energy storage and power delivery solutions, announced the first commercial application of lithium-ion capacitors, developed in conjunction with China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC-SRI), China’s largest rail manufacturer. PowerCell Sweden AB has received the first marine order for two PowerCell S3 prototype stacks, which Swiss Hydrogen will install on a ship powered by photovoltaics. PowerCells’ partner Swiss Hydrogen is developing energy systems for a range of fuel cell applications. The current order placed by Swiss Hydrogen at PowerCell comprises two PowerCell S3 prototypes that will be part of a system that is developed and adjusted to the marine environment.

A regional interdisciplinary team led by Montana State University has received $6 million from the National Science Foundation to address questions about whether biofuels and carbon capture technologies can be sustainably introduced into the Upper Missouri River Basin. The main project goal is to develop a framework for evaluating proposals to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations while maintaining food security, water quality, biodiversity and other benefits, Stoy said.

JILA physicists and colleagues have identified a long-missing piece in the puzzle of exactly how fossil fuel combustion contributes to air pollution and a warming climate. Performing chemistry experiments in a new way, they observed a key molecule that appears briefly during a common chemical reaction in the atmosphere. The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced 55 routes that will serve as the basis for a national network of “alternative fuel” corridors spanning 35 states. The network includes 48 national electric vehicle charging corridors covering nearly 25,000 miles in the 35 states. Drivers can expect either existing or planned charging stations within every 50 miles.

The Port of Seattle, SkyNRG and Carbon War Room (CWR) are partnering to investigate long-term financing mechanisms that could supply all airlines at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) with sustainable aviation fuels. In a global comparison, the Chinese are the biggest fans of autonomous smart cars with an approval rating of 89%. By contrast, consumers in major car-making nations like the US (62%), Japan (56%) and Germany (47%) are much more reserved when it comes to autonomous driving. Those were the results of the electronica Trend Index 2020, a survey of 7,000 consumers in 7 countries around the world conducted on behalf of the international trade fair electronica.

Buick’s plug-in hybrid Velite Concept will make its global debut at the Guangzhou auto show, which opens on November 18. The UK government recently announced it is committing an additional £4 million (US$4.9 million) to the Plug-In Van grant scheme extending the eligibility to larger electric vehicles. Electric trucks above 3.5 tonnes are now be eligible for grants of up to £20,000 (US$24,300). Specifically, N2 vans (3.5 – 12 tonnes gross weight) and N3 vans (more than 12 tonnes gross weight) are now eligible.
